Concerned Citizens of Newport
Our mission is to educate the general public about the issues concerning the privatization of our global waters. Specifically we are concerned about the bottled water industry and how it impacts on our environment both by taking our waters and by the impact of their plastic bottles on our land and air.
We are working with the Polaris Institute and the Corporate Accountability Campaign to distribute activists materials to over 1000 activists on campuses and in the community throughout the US and Canada. We have traveled to Forums and conferences throughout the world talking about this issue.
Location(s)
We are a grassroots organization with membership throughout the state and region. We network with grassroots groups who are fighting the bottled water industry in the US and globally. Our constituents are all global citizens who are fighting the privatization of our waters. Water is a right and must be preserved and protected from private transnational corporations who seek to profit from it. Our board members are all grassroots community actitivists who fought Perrier (Nestle) when they sought to establish a bottling plant in our community.
We have a DVD called THIRST which we will show. It tells of the struggle by grassroots communities in India, Bolivia and the US against the privatization of their water. We also propose a session on water privatization in the US and the Region bringing together water activists in WI, MI, IL and throughout the region.
